Introduction

The interrelated, underlying factors between diet and human health is an area of growing research. Due to the wide-ranging impacts of diet-related chronic disease, there is increased interest in the use of Food is Medicine (FIM) interventions integrated into health care delivery. FIM interventions – healthy foods tailored to meet specific nutritional needs of individuals with or at risk for diet0related health conditions and referred by a healthcare provider or plan – include a spectrum of programs from prevention to treatment, such as medically tailored meals (MTMs), medically tailored groceries (medically tailored food packages), and produce prescriptions. Emerging research indicates that FIM interventions may be associated with improved health outcomes and reduced healthcare utilization and costs.
