On December 17th, NPPC hosted our annual meeting. We discussed our 2025 accomplishments and plans for 2026. We also invited Dr. Seth Berkowitz and Dr. Kurt Hager to discuss their recent studies of Medicaid 1115 Demonstration Waivers, both of which have been incredibly impactful to the field of Food is Medicine.
One takeaway was our discussion of why we do this work. We want PRx to be a covered benefit for members of all government-sponsored health plans. As a covered benefit, PRx would redefine how patients experience healthcare. Patients would receive more than medications and a slew of recommendations; their provider would be inviting them to change their lifestyles and offer them a place to start. In this way, we would be altering the provision of healthcare in the US as we know it. Providers would be able to acknowledge the complexity of their patients’ chronic illnesses and social needs and say: I care about you and I want you to be able to eat food that makes you feel good and healthy – and it’s easy for me to prescribe you the food that you need.
Achieving this goal is only possible because of our members – practitioners, advocates, providers, payers, and researchers who deeply understand the importance of this work. Yes, much of this work is about policy change, but all of the different roles – from research to advocacy to direct service – are connected and at NPPC we work to ensure that we are in alignment and ready to take advantage of any opportunity to advance produce prescriptions in healthcare.
Here’s to achieving our goals in 2026!
