Hazleton center offers fresh produce as prescription for diabetes and other conditions

For people with diabetes and other chronic diseases, Hazleton Integration Project prescribes fresh fruits and vegetables.

HIP started a Fresh Food Farmacy with Geisinger Health Network in mid-April.

People admitted to the program select fresh produce from HIP’s pantry at the Hazleton One Community Center.

Geisinger, which decides who qualifies, offers 20 hours of education about managing diseases, nutritional counseling and recipes.

On each visit to the pantry, people take home fruits and vegetables to last for two weeks in their household.
