The federal government is placing a significant focus—and investing massive amounts of money and political capital—on improving nutrition among Americans. But they may set themselves up for failure if these efforts are not underpinned by a forward-looking, data-driven strategy.

In September, the White House showed how committed it is to improving nutrition among Americans by convening the first White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health in more than 50 years. This convening was notable as it brought together leaders in government, health care, academia and private industry to share ideas and coalesce around the best approaches to move the country forward.
