Alternative Payment Models and Performance in Federally Qualified Health Centers

Key Points

Question  Was the rollout of Medicaid alternative payment models (APMs) associated with federally qualified health center (FQHC) performance?

Findings  In this cohort study that included 684 FQHCs that served 17 823 959 patients in 2021, clinics in states that implemented a Medicaid, value-based APM experienced significant increases in quality of care, including significant improvements in blood pressure control for individuals with hypertension and in blood glucose control for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Meaning  Medicaid APMs may work well in supporting FQHCs’ efforts to improve their clinical quality and better provide care in traditionally underserved communities.
