About NPPC
Our mission is to advance federal and state policy change that leverages Produce Prescriptions as prevention & intervention for diet-related disease and further embeds this effective model into healthcare and food retail systems.
GOAL
The NPPC goal
Embed Produce Prescriptions (PRx) as a covered benefit for members of all government-sponsored health plans whose healthcare providers and case managers diagnose as having or having elevated risk for diet-related illness as well as having or having elevated risk for food insecurity. This includes Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP), Medicare and Medicare Advantage, as well as Indian Health Services, Veterans Health Administration, and TRICARE.
HISTORY
NPPC Origin Story - A Communal Voice for a Powerful Healthcare Tool
The National Produce Prescription Collaborative (NPPC) came together in the spring of 2019 to catalyze the vital role of food and nutrition in improving health and wellness. After establishing and publishing a consensus definition for produce prescriptions, the NPPC formed a policy working group and began the work of educating policymakers and making public comments on regulations related to Food As Medicine in healthcare. Today we continue the work of embedding & institutionalizing Produce Prescriptions within standard healthcare practice through the important work of our federal and state policy working groups, our grassroots taskforce, and the leadership of our steering committee.
Convened and led by Wholesome Wave, the coalition was co-founded by Wholesome Wave, Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, DC Greens, Reinvestment Partners, and a number of other devoted organizations aligned on embedding produce prescriptions into healthcare practice. The inaugural Steering Committee was appointed on August of 2021, and established the formal member-driven coalition structure, dues, and clear oversight of finances and priorities in the first quarter of 2022.
